Whether wire or wicker, there is nothing like an “old-tyme” front basket to bring functionality and nostalgia to your bicycle. Yes, there are some snobs out there who sniff at the very idea. For the rest of us, a bike basket is just the thing for carrying around a few needed items. Sure, saddlebags are great, especially in bad weather – but who likes to bike in bad weather? On a sunny day, I put my camera and a snack in the front basket and I’m off.
If your tastes run towards lightweight aluminum wire baskets, check out the products from Wald. They are an American parts maker in business since 1905. Their models work great with normal handlebars and solve the issues of cable interference very nicely. I would attach a net to the top to keep things from flying out. If you prefer a rear basket, attach it to your rear rack and keep it low, so that it doesn’t interfere with getting on or off the bike.
I happen to prefer woven baskets, but it’s just a personal preference. I especially like the handmade willow baskets available from Nantucket Bike Basket Co. They have several unique styles that are hand-crafted and of high quality. These baskets are woven by real humans, not machines. You can’t buy from Nantucket directly; you have to order them from your local bike shop. They are just the ticket for when I am doing some light shopping, for things like groceries or flowers.
Nantucket is an interesting company. The folks who run it picked up their weaving skills in China. Connoisseurs of bike baskets regard Nantucket baskets as art objects. They are all designed by the company, and are woven by a team of skilled craftspersons. The willow baskets use only the best raw materials, so that each is strong and durable.
The rolled rims are unique, very lovely and stand up to the elements. With rolled rims, the weave doesn’t appear to have a beginning or end. This means the basket will maintain itself intact instead of unraveling over time.
Now no one will fault you for preferring rear panniers, which can have a large capacity protected from the elements. I use them on long trips myself. But the woven basket on the front of my bike makes me happy, and that’s reason enough to keep it.
